Intensive management simultaneously reduces yield gaps and improves milling and baking properties of bread wheat

Genotype (G), environment (E), management (M), and their interactions determine grain yield, biochemical composition, quality of wheat. However, we are not aware studies evaluating whether intensive can simultaneously reduce yield gaps improve wheat milling baking attributes, which were our main objectives. A factorial experiment five genotypes × four intensities (farmer practice, high-input, high-input minus nitrogen, fungicide) was conducted in six Kansas (United States) environments resulting from the combination locations three seasons. Grain 13 parameters characterizing (test weight [TWT], thousand kernel [TKW], protein [GP]), flour (e.g., ash, protein), dough water absorption [WA], stability [DS]), qualities (loaf volume [LV]) measured. For most variables, primary contributor variance E while M G secondary tertiary contributors, except for LV a larger moderator. High input practices increased (4206 kg ha?1) compared to farmer practice (3347 suggesting gap 859 ha?1. Management receiving foliar fungicides improved properties related characteristics (i.e., TKW TWT), more nitrogen WA DS). Across sources variation, response associated positively with responses TKW, TWT, some cases, GP, WA. Our results showed possibility improving selected attributes bread through management.
